A collaboration of Georgia immigrant rights advocacy groups has organized a day of action on February 28, 2021, to call for the release of immigrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) prisons in Georgia and the end of inhumane detention in the Peach State. The organizers plan to hold a demonstration this Sunday at the Atlanta ICE Field Office before caravanning to the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Ocilla, Ga., for another demonstration.
Elected Democrats, including Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, have received invites to appear at the protest. Organizers have invited more than 30 elected officials to join their action, call for the closure of ICDC, and issue public statements denouncing the inhumane detention of immigrants in Blue Georgia. 10 members of Congress visited the prison last September to speak with survivors of coerced gynecological procedures, two weeks after a whistleblower revealed that such abuses of bodily autonomy and medical neglect are rampant within ICDC.
As recently as this past week, reports have come to light detailing a spike in COVID-19 and the mishandling of cases inside the detention center. In an open letter from more than 80 doctors and public health experts, Doctors for Camp Closure last week condemned the conditions and urged for the release of everyone who remains at ICDC. “Everyone in these facilities are at risk of severe illness or death from rampant COVID-19 infections, regardless of any preexisting health condition or age,” reads the letter.
“We’re asking our elected leaders if they are still in solidarity with immigrants and communities in the South who have endured unspeakable harm at the hands of ICE and corporations like LaSalle Corrections and CoreCivic,” said Somos South Georgia. “We’re asking if they’ll return to ICDC with us, and if they still consider the human rights and dignity of those on the inside a political priority under the new administration. We must free everyone from ICE custody here in Blue Georgia, shut down ICDC, and set an example for the rest of the South and the country.
