Protests across India have erupted after the Citizenship Amendment Bill became law, enacted as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Under the CAA, those fleeing from countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in which they are religious minorities will be provided Indian citizenship. This includes Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, and Parsis, but clearly excludes and discriminates against Muslims
In the state of Assam, we saw the CAA implemented first. This decision, fueled by anti-Bengali and anti-Muslim sentiment threatens severe violence against Bengali migrants and those who are unable to produce documents that prove their citizenship.
Protests throughout India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Delhi, have resulted in state sanctioned violence from police against peaceful protesters. Police have been firing tear gas and batons against protesters who refuse to disperse.
The relationship that the US continues to foster with the Indian government despite it’s continued and documented discrimination and brutal state-sanctioned violence against Muslims cannot go unchallenged. Join community members as we express our disdain towards the NRC and CAA, and to show solidarity with those on the ground throughout India who will suffer as a result of the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
