Facing Opposition Forces

Urgent questions about infiltration, surveillance, movement security, and counter-movement opposition face organizers in this moment just as they faced organizers in movements of the past.

It is clear that we need to do this work now more than ever. We cannot forget what happened to the frontline in Ferguson, many who ended up dead. Attacks against are movement are NOT JUST RHETORICAL. So we HAVE to learn how to protect and defend ourselves in the midst of this work. Join us in a dialogue THIS THURSDAY. We are sharing strategies and getting each other ready.

21st century organizers are asking 20th century leaders three critical questions: What was your experience facing off organized opposition? What do we need to anticipate and prepare for? What skills and tools do we need today?

Movement veterans Nelson Johnson, survivor of the Greensboro Massacre, Glory Kilanko of Nigerian freedom movements, Gus Newport, organizer with Malcolm X, and Loretta Ross, long-time reproductive justice leader, will share their experiences facing neo-Nazis, the KKK, militarized government, COINTELPRO, assassinations, rightwing militias, clinic defense, and church burnings—and they will discuss preparation and tools we need for our movement today.
