Alliance for Black Lives is organizing a protest to ensure the safety of ALL students, teachers, support staff, and administrators in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS). We believe unless there are robust safety procedures and other preventative measures, teachers and students should engage in digital learning only.
We understand the importance of in-person learning for academic success and the risks of learning loss and social engagement, however we do not believe it is worth the risk of human life. The data in Georgia and Gwinnett County (confirmed COVID-19 cases & deaths) are enough for us to know that the smart decision is to focus on saving lives and participate in online/virtual learning.
Digital learning save lives. Until we have the proper comprehensive policies and procedures to prevent and track COVID-19, we should not risk the lives of students and teachers. The plan should include contact tracing, school bus safety, classroom learning pods/bubbles, PPE, disinfecting/sanitation, ventilation, outside learning, etc.
We also want to ensure equity and this includes providing every child in need with a laptop, WIFI access, school supplies (including text books), food, and mental health services as needed. Students with special needs should get one-on-one education and care (via appointment) from a specialist to maintain the health of these at-risk students while ensuring they have what they need to progress.
