In November 1992, Georgia State University established the Department of African-American Studies in response to student-led protests. On July 1, 1994, Dr. Charles E. Jones began his tenure as the founding chair of African-American Studies. The Department has grown to include several core faculty members with diverse research interests, numerous part-time instructors, and an ever-growing list of supportive affiliate faculty. In honor of the 25th anniversary of it’s founding, the Georgia State University’s Department of African-American Studies is hosting a three-day conference to highlight the scholarly achievement, community impact and institutional challenges of Black Studies.
